Transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) can induce The Warburg-effect, or aerobic glycolysis, in tumorigenesis. Energy-rich lactate, a by-product of glycolysis, ‘feeds’ tumour cells and increases apoptosis resistance, angiogenesis, and invasion, fuelling tumour progression and metastasis.
